Random Weekend foodie flotsam and jetsam

- Reading "Eat This - 1,oo1 Things to Eat Before You Diet" by Ian Jackman. An interesting mish-mash of American food travel tidbits, as observed by the British Jackman. I learned in the veggie and fruit chapter that the avocado is named for an Aztec-based language's word for testicles. Hmm...makes sense. Now I will look at guacamole in a whole new light.

- My mom visited this weekend and we had a GREAT time. Between walking Belmont Boulevard, visiting the Frist (check out SYLVIA HYMAN's trompe de oeil pottery works exhibit it' s amazing - the fortune cookie pic is an example of her work) , going to see the film "Two Days in Paris," and hiking around Radnor Lake, we lunched at Bread & Company (Erin: Centennial Salad and fresh squeezed Lemonade; Margaret: Wild Rice Salad and marinated asparagus, while Fruit Tea was an experiment that failed. Note to all culinarians - please do NOT corrupt perfectly fine sweet tea with fruit juice. It is absolutely wrong.) We also ate at Siam Cafe on White Bridge Road. Yummy Thai! The Fresh Spring Rolls were a miss, but the Pad Thai was fresh and my chicken with peanut sauce was so good it made me forget all my worries.

- Big props to friend Jenne for her wildly successful dinner party Saturday night. Though it was 90 degrees, the Autumn Harvest theme was fun and made us long for crisper, cooler weather. Her menu: Mixed greens salad with granny smith apples, candied walnuts and baked brie wedges; tasty antibiotic-free rib eye with Havarti/horseradish mashed potatoes and roasted Broccoli; and for dessert, the drool-worthy homemade cinnamon ice cream, apple cake and tiny pecan tartlet. Plus white wine, red wine and Proscecco to accompany each course. We were damn near spoiled! Also, it's not a truly great dinner party until someone falls down the stairs. (Who was the offending lush? I can't dare to divulge, but I will say my black slingbacks will never be the same and my ankle is still a little sore.)

- Congrats to Mother Margaret for her successful shedding of 27 and counting long-gone pounds. You look amazing and are a remarkable inspiration for those of us with a little extra baggage. I have an entire Samsonite set to lose, so henceforth my food posts will hopefully lean towards the healthy side. Less is more, right?

  1. Hmmm, I've heard those stairs are tricky. Rumor has it that almost half of the attendees have had similiar issues...
